Printed books on Jewish cemeteries in the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem: an annotated bibliography

by Mathilde A. Tagger

This 40 pages bibliography has been prepared in the frame of the worldwide Jewish Cemeteries Project and a s contribution of the Israel Genealogical Society to the 5th International Seminar which was held in Paris in July 1997.

This bibliography is a multilingual compilation of 180 books covering 31 countries mostly from Europe, account 400 cemeteries and 75,000 tombstones.

Beside the complete bibliographical description of each item, the titles are translated into English if necessary.

The notes include:

The number of tombstones
The period covered by the tombstones/register/list
The tombstones of everybody (men/women)/men only/rabbis only/outstanding personalities
The location of the cemetery
Biographies and/or genealogical trees, if any
Photographs of tombstones or portraits
The book order (chronological, by cemetery rows, alphabetical)
Index if any (alphabetical, general, etc.)

The whole biography is alphabetically ordered by authors names. At its end the reader will find two geographical indexes:

Region/town/village
Country - region/town/village. A by-product of this project is the list of genealogical trees found in these books.
